In 2021, UPLAND joined a multi-disciplinary team working on the approximately 5,500 gross m2 Physical Sciences Facility located on Dalhousie University’s Studley Campus in Halifax. The proposed facility will create a physical space to support the intersection of physics, chemistry and clean technology research while demonstrating the university’s commitment to the highest levels of sustainability.
The site design balances building program, public spaces, pedestrian circulation, vehicular circulation, bike parking, and vehicle parking, while integrating sensitively with existing heritage buildings and adjacent urban structure. Some features of the site design include outdoor atrium plazas that correspond with interior public spaces, a shared street (that can be configured to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles as required through a system of movable bollards), and an East-facing indigenous garden space
