Avon Region Active Transportation Plan
Active Avon: An Active Transportation Plan for the Avon Region is a powerful document that will enable more physical activity across three distinct communities, through enhanced infrastructure and route options. The innovative process united the region and created a clear path forward through strong engagement of the public. The results have had a positive impact on the future of active transportation, health, and regional sustainability.
Uniting the region with a cohesive and integrated network required creativity. The study area spans urban, rural, and municipal boundaries, and includes critical linkages to other regions in Nova Scotia. The region also presents a wide range of physical and natural characteristics that must be addressed through thoughtful design strategies. The range of solutions that we proposed are adaptable to unique site characteristics and the needs of unique neighbourhoods within the region. This plan pushes the envelope in leveraging the growing enthusiasm for active transportation and is the first step toward triggering a culture shift toward embracing active transportation as a viable and fun mode of transportation.
This plan won a 2015 API Award for Excellence in Planning.
