Lunenburg Academy Site Design
National Historic Site Lunenburg Academy is a 120 year old Second Empire style former school building overlooking Lunenburg, NS. The building is now the only intact 19th century Academy building surviving in Nova Scotia and one of few remaining large scale wooden buildings from that era. In 2011 it ceased being a public school and now has a diverse range of tenants including an advanced music school, a language school and the Lunenburg library.
UPLAND were hired by the Town of Lunenburg to provide concept and detailed design and tender documents for a new site design sensitive to the property’s history but suitable for its new incarnation. The design features a new pedestrian plaza, native pollinator planting and raingardens, improved pedestrian access, new bus drop off area, improved parking area with sustainable urban drainage, new play areas, bespoke wayfinding and interpretive signage.
